Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed)
SNAP-Ed is a set of learning experiences designed to promote healthy eating behaviors, active lifestyles and other nutrition-related behaviors conducive to health and well-being for those receiving or eligible to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Nutrition education activities are based on the USDA’s 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid Food Guidance System.
The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) Guiding Principles, published by USDA/FNS in 2005, describe the overarching purpose and goals of SNAP-Ed. The FY2009
FNS Plan Guidance contains more technical and detailed explanations of the intended structure and delivery of SNAP-Ed. This guidance is published on an annual basis. In Pennsylvania, SNAP-Ed programming is delivered according to three target audience specific tracks.
SNAP-Ed focuses on general nutrition for wellness and primary disease prevention, and is not intended to provide nutrition consultation for management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, or obesity.
